Breakage and glazing
Broken Window & Glass Replacement
Two problems at once: a hole in the building and glass where people walk. In a Montana winter the first one gets urgent faster than almost anywhere.
- Same visit
- Cleared and secured
- Permanent glass
- Measured, then fitted
- Insurance
- Itemised written quotes
- Winter
- Treated as urgent
The drive is the job
Secure on the first trip, glaze on the second
Glass is cut to your opening, so nobody can arrive with the right pane in the van. What we can always do on the first trip is clear the glass, take the loose fragments out of the frame and close the building properly.
In a Montana winter that first trip is the one that matters. An open opening at twenty or thirty below is heat leaving continuously and, on an exterior wall, a real risk to the plumbing behind it. A board-up fixed into framing and sealed at the edges will hold for as long as it needs to.
Then we measure, order, and come back. If there is anything else on the property that needs doing, tell us before that second trip — it rides along for very little.
On the truck
What rides on the truck for breakage
Enough to make a building safe and closed on the first visit, wherever it is.
| What we carry | Why it is on board |
|---|---|
| Board, fixings and sealing tape | Fixed into framing and sealed, so it is weathertight and secure rather than a gesture. |
| Glass clearing and handling kit | Gloves, suction lifters and containers. The fragments still bedded in the frame are the main injury risk and the easiest to miss. |
| Glazing compound, points and beads | So the second visit is a single operation with nothing missing. |
| Temporary sheeting and film | For openings where boarding is impractical or the pane is coming within days. |
| Measuring gauges | Including for sealed units, where thickness and spacer depth matter as much as height and width. |
| Hardware for the sash | Latches, keepers and stops, because after an impact or a forced entry the surround usually needs work too. |
Make the trip count
Before we drive out
Five things that change what we bring and how fast we come.
Tell us if the building is open to the weather
It changes the priority. An unsecured opening in winter goes to the front of the day.
Say roughly how big the pane is
And whether it is single glass or two panes with a gap. It decides what gets ordered and what we can do on the first visit.
Photograph it before anything moves
Thirty seconds, and it is the only record an insurer will have of what it looked like.
Check the rest of the elevation
Especially after hail or wind. Breakage rarely happens to one window and finding the rest now saves another long drive.
Make a list of everything else
Doors, screens, a slider that drags. All of it rides along on a trip that is already happening.
What Montana does to it
How windows break in Montana
Five mechanisms, and only two of them involve weather.
Hail and wind-driven debris
The largest single cause across most of the state. Gravel, branches and loose material driven by serious wind, and hail most years in the east and centre.
Thermal stress
Strong high-elevation sun on part of a pane with the rest in shadow from a deep eave, a log overhang or a storm panel. The differential is enough to split glass with nothing touching it.
Deep cold on an already-stressed pane
Glass that has been nicked or chipped will often let go on the first severe cold night rather than at the moment of damage.
Ordinary impact
Equipment, stock, mowers, thrown gravel off a road. On ranch property the gravel is the big one, and it is almost always ground-floor on the road side.
Settlement in log buildings
A log wall that has settled onto a window frame will eventually break the glass. If a pane cracks in a log home with no impact, that is the first thing to check.
By building
The buildings we work in
Access, glass type and what sits around the opening differ sharply across these four.
Log and timber homes
Log walls settle vertically for years after they go up, and the windows and doors in them need slip space above the frame to allow for it. Where that space was never left, or has been filled with trim and foam over the years, the opening slowly crushes the unit. A door that will not latch in a log home is often the building moving, not the hardware failing.
Ranch and outbuildings
Shops, barns, bunkhouses and equipment buildings with hardware that has to work in weather and gets no attention until it stops. Usually simple assemblies, usually repairable, and usually a long way from anybody who would come out for them.
In-town housing
Billings, Missoula, Butte, Helena and Great Falls hold a great deal of early-century stock — weight-and-pulley sash, putty glazing and original storm windows — plus post-war and modern suburbs where balances and sealed units fail together.
Manufactured homes
Common across rural Montana. Lightweight aluminium or vinyl frames, out-swing doors and sizes that match nothing in a store. We have a separate page for these because the parts and the advice are genuinely different.
Questions
Breakage questions
Can you replace the glass the same day?
No, and nobody honestly can. Glass is cut to your opening. What we can always do the same day is clear it and close the building.
What does securing actually involve?
Clearing the broken glass, removing loose fragments from the sash, and boarding or filming the opening so it is weathertight and secure.
It is thirty below and the window is out.
Tell us that when you call. It changes the priority and it changes how we board it up.
Only one pane of my double-glazed window broke.
The window still looks closed, but the sealed unit has failed as a whole and is replaced as one item.
A pane cracked in our log home and nothing hit it.
Check for settlement. A log wall coming down onto a window frame will break glass, and the fix is the opening rather than the pane.
Will you provide paperwork for a claim?
Yes — written, itemised quotes and invoices formatted to submit without rewriting.
