Origin
It started with a question nobody answered straight
Why does a sash that will not stay up come back as a quote for the whole house?
We kept watching Montana homeowners get told their windows were finished when the actual fault was a parted cord, a keeper three millimetres out of register, or a log wall that had settled onto the frame. The quotes were not fraudulent. They came from companies whose business is selling replacement units, and a replacement is what those companies have to offer.
And then there was everybody too far out to be worth anybody's time. Ranch properties, cabins, manufactured homes two hours from the nearest town, outbuildings nobody would drive to. A great deal of Montana simply gets told no.
So the business is built around the drive. One item on the price list, a stocked truck so the job finishes first time, and a standing suggestion that you walk the property and make a list before we set off.
Method
Four things we hold to
Repair, and only repair
There is no version of this business where recommending a replacement earns us anything. That is the design, not a slogan on a truck.
One trip where we can
A stocked truck, a diagnosis that starts on the phone, and an open invitation to add everything else on the property to the list.
Say when it is the building
Log settlement, frost heave and an unlevel manufactured home all show up at the opening. We will tell you when the window is the symptom rather than the fault, even though that is not work we can sell you.
Say the unprofitable thing
Defogging does not restore a seal. Planing a swollen door cannot be undone. A single screen is not worth a two-hour drive. We will tell you all three.
People
Who turns up
A narrow trade worked every day. Our technicians handle the same systems constantly — weight-and-pulley sash in Butte and Helena, balances through the suburban stock, log home openings in the valleys, aluminium sliders and out-swing doors in manufactured homes, and storefront closers on main streets across the state.
They arrive in a stocked truck, which matters more here than almost anywhere. A return trip across two counties for a part nobody thought to bring is a wasted day for everybody, so the diagnosis starts on the phone and the truck is loaded from it.
They will also explain what they found, including when the honest answer is that the window is fine and the building has moved.
